Fully funded TWAS NRF doctoral fellowship 2023-2024: Opportunities for Research excellence

TWAS, the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries, promotes long-term prosperity via research, education, policy, and diplomacy. TWAS is a global science academy with headquarters in Trieste, Italy. TWAS was created in 1983 by a prominent group of scientists from the developing world, led by Pakistani physicist and Nobel laureate Abdus Salam.

They shared the view that developing countries could solve difficulties such as hunger, sickness, and poverty by strengthening their scientific and engineering capabilities. The Academy received critical early backing from Italian scientists and political leaders.

Through the NRF-TWAS Doctoral Fellowships is collaborating with (TWAS) – The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Research in Developing Nations – to advance research in developing nations. Fully funded TWAS NRF doctoral fellowship 2023-2024 are available at South African research institutes for a maximum of three years. They are given to scientists from poor nations (other than South Africa) in order for them to pursue PhD studies in the natural sciences.

The NRF’s academic minimum for postgraduate financing is 65%. The admission age requirement for honours, master’s, and doctorate studies is 28 years or younger in the year of application, independent of the initial year of registration. Successful candidates will receive funding for either the Full Cost of Study (FCS) or the Partial Cost of Study (PCS).

Only South African citizens and Permanent Residents will be eligible for FCS financing if they are financially poor (i.e., have a combined household family income of less than or equivalent to R350 000 per year), have a handicap, or have extraordinary academic performance. International students are eligible for the partial Cost of study. 

Courses offered are; Agricultural Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biological Systems and Organisms, Neurosciences, Engineering Sciences, Physics, etc. Students are only eligible to pursue research in Science, Engineering, and Technology (SET) disciplines because only these disciplines will be supported under the Fully funded TWAS NRF doctoral fellowship 2023-2024.

The following benefits are provided in the Fully Funded TWAS NRF Doctoral Fellowship 2023-2024

  • Partial Cost of Study (PCS) funding and this will only cover tuition fees (R30 000 per annum)
  • Accommodation costs for a maximum of R101 196 per annum per student.
  • NRF will cover the cheapest return economy flight and the visa and/or study permit costs for Fully funded TWAS NRF doctoral fellowship 2023-2024 awarded candidates.

To qualify for the Fully funded TWAS NRF doctoral fellowship 2023-2024, the candidate must fulfill all of the following requirements

1. Eligible nations: All non-EU nations. 

2. Must not reside, study, or work in South Africa in 2022;

3. Applicants who were previously employed, studying for a degree, or conducting research in South Africa and have returned to their place of origin but have been there for less than two (2) years are unable to apply. 

4. To apply for doctoral funding, you must have an MSc degree in a natural scientific discipline and a minimum of 65% at the master’s level.

5. Must register at a South African public university in 2023 on a full-time basis and may be based at any South African public research institution, including Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), Science Councils, and National Research Facilities; must be a maximum of 32 years old by 31 December of the year of application. 

6. Must have proof of evaluation of all foreign qualifications (obtained from non-South African universities) evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. Failure to produce proof will result in the application being denied.

7. Must comply with the visa and immigration rules of the applicant’s home country and South Africa.  

8. Under the program for study in South Africa, the candidate must organize his or her own Visa and/or study permission. Neither the NRF nor TWAS will be in charge of aiding with visa arrangements. However, the NRF will pay for the cheapest return economy ticket as well as the visa and/or study permit expenses for fully funded TWAS NRF doctoral fellowship 2023-2024 applicants who must return to their home country after completing their studies. Students who do not return to their home country will be required to repay the NRF an amount equal to the number of years of study support they received. 

9. Must offer formal proof of study application and/or acceptance letter from a host South African institution, department, or laboratory, and give a motivation letter from the potential doctorate supervisor.

It is the applicant’s obligation to contact the appropriate school to apply for acceptance and to arrange a supervisor for the PhD studies, as well as to present an English language competency certificate (if available at the time of application).

If this is not accessible, it will be requested before any NRF funds are granted to the student and must fulfill the following English Language Proficiency Academic exam requirements: IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (paper) 575 (TWE 4.5); TOEFL iBIT (minimum 20); or Cambridge 58. Applicants may seek support from the British Council in their native country.

10. Must offer a specific research proposal that must be registered and authorized by the host school, as well as a letter of support from the potential host supervisor; provide an official academic record on university letterhead; and be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.

To be placed in the fully funded TWAS NRF doctoral fellowship 2023-2024 research training programme, applicants must contact universities in South Africa or possible supervisors for information about accredited HEIs and other Public Research Institutions. 

Applicants must provide an official letter from their host institution, department, or laboratory, as well as motivation from the applicant’s host. It is the applicant’s obligation to contact the appropriate institution to apply for admittance. Furthermore, it is the applicant’s obligation to acquire a supervisor for the study; the research project must be registered and authorized by the host university (a letter of support from the potential supervisor must be provided to the application).
